True Crime to close down (again)

Just months after being resurrected, it appears another channel is to bite the dust at the end of the month.

The True Crime channel, available across the UK on Sky and Virgin Media, is shutting up shop following the end of programming on the 30th June 2019.

Sky and Virgin TV guides advise viewers that from the morning of 1st July 2019, programmes are "no longer available".

Owned by Columbia Pictures Corporation, a division of Sony Pictures Television, True Crime was only reinstated as a channel back in February, when it took over slots from the former TruTV UK, the ill-fated UK version of the US channel, which was taken over by Sony last year.

It formed part of a tangled web of crime-related channels run by Sony - TruTV UK was reprogrammed into a 'real crime' channel in its last weeks on air, while in 2018, Sony launched "Sony Crime Channel", replacing its previous entertainment channel on Sky and Virgin and the former, first incarnation of the True Crime channel on Freeview and Freesat.

Ultimately, all of the various incarnations contained a similar mix of crime drama and factual entertainment shows, but none appeared to have managed to gain sufficient audiences for Sony.
