Comcast launches CNBC HD on Sky across Europe

Comcast's takeover of Sky is starting to make itself noticeable across Europe.

Sky has begun carrying Comcast's CNBC Europe in high definition and free-to-air on both its Italian and German/Austrian platforms, enabling viewers tuned to Hotbird (13°E) and Astra 1 (19.2°E) to receive the HD channel, increasing HD coverage of the channel to all of Europe, North Africa and parts of the Middle East.

This follows a similar move in the UK and Ireland via Astra 2E (28.5°E) earlier this year and marks the first significant channel distribution change on Sky's European platforms since the Comcast takeover.

The main variation between the UK/Ireland feed of CNBC and the version for continental Europe is that The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (weeknights and across the weekends) on CNBC Europe is replaced by Late Night with Seth Meyers on the UK and Ireland feed.

And with the UK and Irish rights to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon sitting with Sky - it's going to feature on the soon-to-launch Sky Comedy pay TV channel - this anomaly is unlikely to change anytime soon.

CNBC's standard definition simulcasts, hosted by other providers on Astra 1, 2 and Hotbird remain unchanged, for the time being. It's anticipated that the SD outlets will either migrate to Sky capacity or close when current arrangements end.

Meanwhile, Sky has been migrating NBCUniversal's pay TV channels to its own UK/Irish broadcast capacity on Astra 2 in a move that went largely unnoticed by subscribers.
