ITV4 secures La Liga TV rights for season opener

ITV has confirmed it's continuing its partnership with La Liga, in an announcement made just a day before the season opener.

Broadcast rights for La Liga for the next three seasons had failed to sell, threatening a television blackout of this season's La Liga matches, despite the lure of major clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona.

As a result of the last minute interim deal, which promises live coverage of one match on each of the first three matchdays, ITV4 has made a late change to its schedule to make room for live coverage of the season opener - Athletic Bilbao v FC Barcelona. ITV4 will be live from 8pm UK time on Friday 16th August. The previously scheduled Darts will be shown either side of the football.

The channel will also screen highlights from La Liga following each Matchday.

The interim deal between La Liga and ITV sees two further live games on ITV4 in the coming weeks:

  • FC Barcelona v Real Betis - 8pm  - Sunday 25th August 2019
  • Villareal CF v Real Madrid - 8pm - Sunday 1st September 2019

ITV4 is available on Sky, Freesat, Freeview and Virgin Media. ITV4 HD is available on Sky and Virgin Media. Coverage will also be available online via ITV Hub.

La Liga rights switched to streaming service Eleven Sports UK last season, but the service failed to gain sufficient subscribers and carriage on any traditional TV platform.
