BritBox goes into beta

BritBox UK is now beta testing ahead of its formal launch later this year.

BritBox beta is a pre-release version of the site ( that is being given to a selected group of users for testing. The beta service currently only offers a selection of the full content that is promised at launch.

A new Android app for BritBox UK has now landed on Google Play. Additional platforms will be made available shortly.

At launch, BritBox UK will be included as one of the apps available on all TVs that support Freeview Play, as well as on Samsung Smart TVs and on Apple devices.

Beta testers are being warned that while many of the features are ready, it is still changing things and "there will probably be a number of bugs".

The subscription service will provide box sets of programmes from the BBC, ITV and Channel 5. Viewers will be able to try the service out with a free 30 day trial. Thereafter, access will cost £5.99 a month.

The minimum requirements for BritBox on PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones are: 
  • Operating systems: Windows 7 or later. Android 4.4 or later. Mac OS X 10.9 or later. iOS 9.3 or later.
  • Supported browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge stable versions under two years old.
Final approval for the joint venture was given by Ofcom last week. 

BritBox UK was born out of the subscription video-on-demand service offered to viewers in Canada and the USA, where BritBox is the o ly place to find a broad libary of British TV content.
